ASTM A139 carbon steel spiral-welded pipe is an electric-fusion arc-welded pipe manufactured with a continuous helical seam for transporting water, industrial liquids, gas, or vapor. The specification covers five pipe-mill grades—Grades A, B, C, D, and E—with minimum yield strengths from 205 to 360 MPa.
The spiral-forming process supports economical production of large outside diameters while maintaining controlled circumference, wall thickness, end ovality, and weld integrity. Each supplied pipe length can be hydrostatically tested, and the product may be furnished with bare, varnished, epoxy-coated, polyethylene-coated, or cement-mortar-lined surfaces according to the operating environment.
ASTM A139 applies to electric-fusion arc-welded straight-seam or helical-seam pipe from NPS 4 upward, with nominal wall thicknesses not exceeding 25.4 mm. The pipe is specifically intended for conveying liquid, gas, or vapor.

Dimensional tolerances, end preparation and standard length requirements are based on ASTM A139 provisions.
The pipe seam is manufactured as a complete-joint-penetration groove weld. The continuous helical configuration distributes the seam around the pipe circumference and permits large-diameter pipe to be produced from controlled-width steel coil or plate.
Production-weld tensile specimens taken across the weld must achieve at least 95% of the specified minimum tensile strength of the steel grade. During welding-procedure qualification, reduced-section weld specimens must achieve at least 100% of the specified minimum tensile strength of the selected grade.
ASTM A139 requires each pipe length to undergo hydrostatic testing. The standard test pressure is calculated using:
P = 2St / D
Where:
The standard pressure is limited to 19.3 MPa unless otherwise addressed by an agreed testing condition. Test pressure is held for at least five seconds.
Within 100 mm of the pipe ends, out-of-roundness must not exceed 1% of the specified diameter. This control improves field alignment, circumferential welding consistency and fit-up with fabricated fittings.
The five ASTM A139 grades provide minimum yield strengths ranging from 205 MPa for Grade A to 360 MPa for Grade E. This allows the pipe grade to be selected according to diameter, wall thickness, design pressure and installation loading.
Buyer concern frequently centers on incomplete penetration, slag inclusion, lack of fusion and discontinuities at strip joints.
Our production control can include:
The inspection scope and acceptance criteria are confirmed before production and stated in the inspection and test plan.
Large-diameter pipe with excessive ovality can increase alignment time and produce uneven root gaps during site welding.
Pipe ends are mechanically sized and checked for circumference, diameter and ovality. ASTM A139 limits end ovality to 1% within 100 mm of each end. Where tighter site-fit-up control is required, project-specific end tolerances, internal line-up compatibility and match marking can be agreed before manufacture.
Bare carbon steel is not inherently corrosion-resistant. Coating selection must therefore match the transported fluid, soil condition, operating temperature and installation method.
Available corrosion-protection systems include:
Coating type, thickness, surface preparation grade and repair procedure should be specified in the purchase order rather than treated as unspecified commercial finishing.
| Standard System | Applicable Standard | Brief Description |

| ASME | ASME B36.10M | Reference dimensions for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe |
| EN | EN 10217-1 | Welded non-alloy steel tubes for pressure purposes at room temperature |
| GOST | GOST 10704 / GOST 10705 | Dimensional and technical requirements for longitudinal electric-welded steel pipe; use only when specified as the contractual standard |
| JIS | JIS G 3452 or project-specified JIS standard | Carbon steel piping for ordinary service; not a direct grade equivalence to ASTM A139 |
| GB | GB/T 3091 | Welded steel pipe for low-pressure liquid delivery |
| API | API Specification 5L | Line pipe for oil and gas pipeline transportation; separate qualification and testing requirements apply |
These standards are not automatically interchangeable. Grade, chemistry, mechanical properties, inspection frequency, hydrostatic pressure and dimensional tolerances must be checked against the contractual specification.
ASTM A139 spiral-welded pipe can be used as a large-diameter raw-water transmission main connecting a reservoir intake station to a municipal water-treatment plant.
For this application, the pipe may be supplied with:
Final grade, wall thickness, surge-pressure allowance, external loading, corrosion allowance and coating system must be determined by the pipeline design engineer.
